Archeological sites in Sabac and it's surroundings confirm that settlements existed in this area in the earlier stone age and in the Roman times.Sabac was the part of Nemanja state in 13th and 14th century, and it belonged to Macva eparhy. The name Macva, which originated from that period, marks fertile plain ehtending from Sabac to Drina,bat it also used to mark the name of the town. During the Middle Ages slovenic settlement existed on the territoru of Sabac. It was called Zaslon, which meant hill or shelter from the flood. The Turks took over Sabac in the second part of 15 th centuru, after the Turkish occupation of Serbia.The Turks built the fortress not far from the river Sava in 1470. The fortress was not very large but it had tall and strong bullwark. The Turks named the fortress and town around it Bejerdelen, which meant " the one who strikes sidewaus ".

The name Sabac is of recent date.We dont know exactly when and where were it's origins.There are several theories trying to explain the present Sabac becomes more important with the First Serbian Rising in 1804. There were several important battles between the Turks and Serbian rebels in the vicinity of Sabac.The most important was the battle in Misar in August 1806. Misar,village not far from Sabac, was the scene of famous battle where the Serbs led by Karadjordje Petrovic beat the powerful turkish army of Kulin Kapetan. Many Serbian heroes became known for their bravery, especially Milos -Pocerac, Jakov Nenadovic,Stojan Cupic- Zmaj od Nocaja, pop Luka Lazarevic, Cincar Janko. Sabac started it's development right after the Second Serbian rising.This is the time when

Sabac was under the administration of Jevrem Obrenovic, brother of Duke Milos Obrenovic. He administred Sabac for 15 years and improved the life of Sabac which was typical turkish provincial town.He hired engineers who started proper urbanized building of Sabac, he built roads,made the rules for comunal activity.The first piano, window glass in Serbia were seen here. The most important made in Sabac during the rule of Jevrem are :
-First district hospital and pharmacy in Serbia, built in 1826.
-The first school in Serbia after the Turkish occupation, built in 1826.
-The " Main Scholl ", built in 1837.
-The first theatrical perfomances from 1840.
-Musical Society is formed as the forerunner of developed musical life in Serbia - army barracks

The development of the town was interrupted by the First World War. Major military operations going on in this area, and bloody revenge of the Austrian army for the lost battles, led to the terrible suffering of Sabac and its surroundings.There were 14000. inhabitants in Sabac before the war, only 7000 remained Sabac has three unique medals which were given for war werits :French War Cross with palm ( 1920 ), Czech War Cross ( 1920 ),Czech War Cross (1925 ), Karadjordje's Star. The famous battle on the mountain Cer in the vicinity of Sabac took place in August 1914. The second World War hit the area very hard, so Sabac suffered a lot in the first year of the war. More than 7000. people from this town were killed in the Second World War. Freedom finally came in
October 23 rd 1944.
